My Story

My name is Rachel, a.k.a. Ellie the Elephant Runner. I’m mum to a wonderful daughter and two little dogs. I have Asperger’s and Bipolar, which don’t define me but do make life a little unstable at times.

At the start of my story in July 2013, I was very overweight. The furthest I ever walked was to the fridge and back. I never thought I could run, but I knew exercise would improve my mental health so I gave it a go. I did pretty well – lost a few stone, ran a few races, even did a marathon!

Unfortunately, everything ground to a halt a couple of years later due to a lengthy episode of mania followed by a longer episode of depression. Anti-psychotic meds are notorious for causing lethargy and weight gain; I ate and slept my way through several months of 2015.

Thanks to a lot of support from those around me, including MIND Mental Health Charity’s ELEFRIENDS FORUM, I’m currently off meds, back in my running shoes and taking on my biggest challenge ever.

I’m aiming to raise £1,000 at my JustGiving Fundraising Page for MIND Mental Health Charity. Along the way, I’ll be documenting the journey back to (hopefully) health, weight loss and physical & mental fitness, with the help of a local film student, Sam.

My goal? To run* the London Marathon 2017 – in the elephant costume, of course. UPDATE: I’ve been lucky enough to get a ballot place for London, so I’m definitely in!

The challenge? I’m currently around 5 stone overweight, a size 20, and I sound like Darth Vader on a steam train when I run for more than five minutes.
